Follow Friday #1

April 23rd, 2010

On Twitter there is an act of kindness that is all about recommending your favorite tweeps to one another with the suggestion to follow them. The post would include either #FF or #FollowFriday so that people can follow the conversation. This is a fun thing that people on Twitter do on Fridays to help each other build their following.

A few weeks back Chris Brogan made a comment about #FF getting just a bit out of hand because most people were listing as many people as they could fit. And, how that wasn’t the point of Follow Friday. He had the outstanding idea to share one friend suggestion at a time with some thoughtful comments on why you should follow that person and to put a link to their blog to help them with their blog traffic. Excellent idea and I wanted to follow his lead. (Here is Chris’s post: http://www.chrisbrogan.com/turn-twitters-follow-friday-in-blog-traffic/ )

I shared that post with a friend, Todd Temaat who took the idea a step further and made a blog post to spotlight his favorite Twitter friends and their blogs. This was a fabulous sediment and another great idea that I wanted to implement. So here is my first Follow Friday blog post where I will Continue reading »

Building Relationships – Try Twitter

April 13th, 2010

Relationships are key for us in building our business and moving forward. Social media has quickly become one of the best tools to stay in touch as well as to build new relationships with people we may never have had the opportunity to meet if it were not for social media. Great people that we have a lot in common with and may even do business with are all over the planet and you can meet them from the comfort of your own home, how cool is that?

Twitter is one of the fasted growing sites and if you are not on twitter already you may want to consider getting involved. I was at a conference last April and one of the first announcements was the twitter hash tag for the event and that the top 3 tweeters would get a door prize. I was not able to participate because I didn’t have an account, in fact I don’t think I knew what it was?? I remember feeling really left out and got an account as soon as I got home.

A great way to develop relationships with people on twitter is to RT (re-tweet) what they are saying or RT their blog posts. You’ll see just to the right of my post is a little gray box with a green click button underneath. When you click that it will put a link to that post out on your twitter stream. This is a very nice thing to do and you are more then welcome to practice here on my blog (hint hint). Practice as many times as you like!

The reason this can help you cultivate stronger relationships is because the person you RTed will know you did that for them and will more often then not, stop by to thank you on your page. You can tell who is talking about you or to you by clicking where the @ sign is next to yout twitter handle, under your home button in the right side bar. Be sure to check that each time you are on twitter. Follow up with people and get to know who they are and how you can support them.

Poll question? Do you use twitter? If you do, has it helped you build some great relationships? If you don’t, what is the biggest challenge or reason why not? Share your feed back here and leave a comment.
