Success Map – Small Business Entrepreneur
A business needs many things to be successful. The crazy thing is that you can ask 25 successful people what they do that makes their business thrive and you may very well get 25 different answers. Sure there will be some cross over and a connection, but no two maps would be the same. The differences can be very subtle and don’t forget they each add their own unique twist and personality into the mix.
What if someone asked you to create a map of your success, they offered to pay you a great deal if you would provide a step by step guide to reach success in your market or in your niche? What would that look like? This is a fun and productive idea because it would cause you to focus much more intently on what you do and how you do it so that you could share this map. Most people don’t even know exactly what and how they do most things because they are on auto pilot.
The other part of this ploy is that you may well be aware that you are not on a clear path to success and the idea of creating a map for others would hold you accountable to living and working by a higher standard then you typically do. If you were responsible for creating a map of success and you did not yet think of yourself as successful then you might take your job and your role much more seriously then you do right now. What do you think?
If you were going to write and design a map for someone to follow in your footsteps of great success what would that look like? Where would you start?

I would start with the two things no one starting up wants to hear, but has to: Invest in something for your business, then take action on it.
Even spending $17 on a product gives me the feeling that I HAVE to get my money back from that investment in one way or another. Then I do something about it, and keep doing it until I get that $17 back (hopefully more).
A lot of start-up entrepreneurs don’t want to invest anything. In turn, they take very little action on their business. They worry and second guess. Sometimes, forever.
This is a great idea–a success map. And you pose some very interesting questions to ponder. It sounds like something every business person should do. Not only will they have the steps to their success, but it will also reinforce the fact that they ARE successful. We can be successful even if we are just starting out, by taking action towards the goal every day.
Great blog and great comments. I too found myself pondering what my map would look like. Besides reinforcing my successes, I think a map would show you areas that need more attention and focus. To often people want to receive money for as little work as possible. Investment, no matter how big or small is required if you want to see good returns.
Good question. And good comments in response. Many great ideas in your analogy. So many new business builders start out and only know they are heading in a general direction, like southeast rather than a clear destination like Atlanta. They are missing the milestones along the way like arriving at the airport in time for takeoff.
Perhaps their advisors who had been to the airport in Atlanta before told them to get there an hour early, they convince themselves their business is different, they don’t need no stupid airplane as they watch their competition fly over their heads.
Bless their hearts, wish them well. They may make it to Atlanta… somehow, eventually. Those are the folks on an adventure as opposed to those building a venture.
The map to a successful business starts with a crystal clear starting point and destination. It would show the milestones along the way. It would point out the potholes and deadend streets. Shortcuts, yes! The map would be drawn by those who had been there before and experienced the lay of the land.
And what’s on the back of your map? I trust it is your notes about your trip that you can pass along to the next traveler dreaming of Atlanta.
It would be a treasure hunt map. Follow the clues and find the hidden treasure. A treasure map always has an X marks the spot, but the route to the treasure is not always clear. Clues have to be understood and interpreted – much like the clues and events that happen around us in our daily lives. Some events should be ignored, and extra special attention should be paid to those areas that will lead us to more fulfilment in our lives (whatever that may look like to you1)
All of us have a hidden treasure inside us. Sometimes we just need a higher vantage point or an outsiders viewpoint to pin point it’s exact location.
Hi, my worry is that I don’t have a lot of money to invest right now so therefore I want to make sure I make the right investments. I am not sure who I can trust and what products to make the initial investments in! Any advice on how to start my business would be great!
Thanks
There are certainly a lot of choices about who to work with when you first start out online. Many ‘teachers’ offer free calls which is a great way to get to know someone before you work with them. Ask questions and see if there is a fit. Also, ask others who are doing well what class’s and programs they are in. Great people to trust are everywhere and they stand out. I tell my clients who are short on funds to look for a program that will lead to the quickest path to cash so they can build up their budget. At this moment my top picks are affiliate marketing or PLR. If you have a great amount of content yourself then offering a class may help you get off the ground. Continuing education is a huge part of success in my opinion and will need to be in your business budget for as long as you are in business. The biggest factor to any program is that you work very hard and that you don’t give up!!! I hope this helps!

So true Lauren! We all have hidden treasure and a higher vantage point will certainly do us good. I also love how others see in us what we don’t often see ourselves and the more others believe in us the more we surprise ourselves by proving them right! Life is an adventure and I believe we will stumble across many “X marks the spot” treasures if we are open to finding them. What fun!!
